June 1, 2018A lot of firsts happened on this trip. It was my first time in New York, first time traveling alone, and most importantly, my FIRST New York Fashion Week. I wasn’t afraid of failing, getting lost, or being alone. I was actually excited for those things- to learn and grow from them. I was afraid though. I was afraid that this thing I’ve dreamed of as long as I can remember would not live up to my expectations. I was afraid of being associated with a team that didn’t align with my professional morals. I knew it wouldn’t be glamorous. The “glam” life rarely is. But would it be easy? I didn’t want easy. I wanted to be pushed farther than I ever have before. I wanted to be surrounded by people who give as much of their life to this craft as I do. I wanted to be stuck in a room full of people who showed up to do whatever it takes; not just to do a job. People who made sacrifices. Fashion Week did not disappoint. The Moroccanoil team was full of notably talented people. I was blown away by how humble and kind the key artists were and how respectful they were to everyone around them. They made it clear that taking care of the models was a necessity and if you’ve ever worked with me you know that’s a MUST in my book. So all my fears became a thing of the past as we settled into the first show.
The thing I love most about being on set or a show is that every person is part of the big picture and you have to work with each other in order to be successful. There is a thrill that comes along with being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s a place where having trust in strangers is your only option. It’s like each role makes up a piece of this creative puzzle and without all the pieces it’s never complete. Every little step counts, equally. From hair, makeup, wardrobe, lighting to set design and the venue- the list could go on and on. We all need one another just as much as the next. I’m incredibly grateful I had the opportunity to work with such brilliant people.
My only other major fear was getting my carry-on suitcase in the overhead bin by myself. My friend’s advice was “if you block the aisle long enough someone will help you.” I’m happy to report I didn’t need to use that tactic. I did it, guys. Once we landed though I couldn’t reach to get it down. I hopped and missed a couple times- just long enough to picture myself getting carried away on a stretcher with a concussion from it falling on my head. Then a friendly neighbor stepped in. Thank you for saving my life, friend.
